In an exclusive interview, I had the privilege of delving into the inner workings of this powerhouse group. A heartfelt thank you to Jaz, Shaad the BEAST, B0rne, and Guru Kozy for generously sharing their insights and perspectives.
1. How do you maintain composure on stage with the group:
Jaz @jaz.mp3_
Jaz: “When it comes to performing, I'm always the most confident if I've done some preparation beforehand. Hearing myself get a few solid reps of my particular songs beforehand, even if I've already performed the song a bunch before, gives me the peace of mind to know that I'm about to crush it. As far as maintaining my composure on stage with the group goes, I've learned that relaxation is key. If you're tense, it will show, and the audience will pick up on that. It's a process I'm still picking up from the others, but relaxation is always the goal.”
Shaad the BEAST: "GRRRRR! The straightforward response to that question is that I don't. Ever since I embarked on my journey as an artist, my signature has been to embody the essence of the BEAST! Even as a solo artist before SpaceGoonz, composure wasn't part of the performance equation. It's all about unleashing animalistic energy—anything but calm, cool, or collected. No, it's about being wild, free, and untamed."
Skunk @blameskunk
B0rne: “These are not just my friends; they're my brothers. Standing beside them means standing beside some of my most vehement supporters. They amplify my lines, fuel my enthusiasm, and elevate my presence. It's impossible not to feel invincible surrounded by such electrifying energy."
Guru: "I'd say our cohesion stems from keeping it authentic, which has always been our approach. Unlike a 'typical rap group,' our structure allows each of us to shine as individuals easily. With a diverse array of flavors among us, truly understanding our sound requires attentive listening. Aligned by shared visions of community and revolution, navigation among us is seamless. During performances, we take turns, ensuring each voice takes the forefront, contributing to our collective synergy."
Guru Kozy @gurukozy
2. What is your individual strength in the group:
Jaz: “Killing features… also, I think I bring a new-age sound to our group that blends well with our classic hip-hop vibe. And since I'm already patting myself on the back, I'll also say versatility along with my melodic style.”
Shaad the BEAST: "We are an incredibly diverse group, each member bringing a distinct set of strengths to the table. Personally, I consider my strength to lie in authenticity—simply being myself. Every facet of my existence, both as an individual and as an artist, is what I contribute to our collective dynamic. No one else can embody Shaad the BEAST, and I, in turn, cannot replicate anyone else. That, to me, defines my individual strength within the group."
B0rne: “I believe this question is easier addressed from an outsider's perspective. If I were to define my contribution, I'd say I bring a distinct sense of wisdom and perspective to my lyrics that's not only relatable but also thought-provoking."
B0rne @b0rne_
Guru: "When it comes to crafting new music, my typical process involves drawing inspiration directly from life experiences. I would assert that each of us engages in songwriting, driven either by a competitive spirit or a creative impulse."
3. What non-musical influences do you have:
Jaz: “Eiichiro Oda, aka Him, aka that man, aka our generation's best author/storyteller. Tom Brady. Aoi Todo & Vinsmoke Sanji iykyk”
Shaad the BEAST: "This is a challenging question, as music holds an indispensable place in my life. It has served as my sanctuary, providing an escape from the trials of my existence, spanning from infancy to adulthood. Throughout this journey, I have been deeply immersed in listening to, creating, and performing music, making my primary influences predominantly musical. Beyond the realm of music, my grandparents emerge as monumental non-musical influences. I spent a substantial portion of my childhood under their guidance.
Shaad the BEAST @shaad_the_beast
My grandfather, exemplifying unparalleled work ethic and wisdom, instilled in me a profound sense of diligence, a quality that is both recognized and highly valued. He imparted invaluable lessons, including the wisdom of listening twice as much as I speak. My late grandmother, {rest easy granny, the music is in my head}, embodied kindness, forgiveness, understanding, and a wisdom equal to, if not surpassing, that of my grandfather. She genuinely sought to understand each person as an individual, leaving an indelible mark on me. I proudly carry forward these same traits, striving to uphold her legacy."
B0rne: "Spirituality is a cornerstone of my existence. I prioritize inner work, seeking understanding not only within my immediate surroundings but also in the expansive universe we call home. Through my music, I express the nuances of my spiritual journey on this celestial rock."
Blayce @blaycetherapper
4. What can people expect at the SpaceGoonz live performances:
Jaz: “Bars…. That is all. Oh, and lots of head-bopping, too, can't forget”
Shaad the BEAST: “Unity and community through our art and our message. Unmatched energy, lyricism, diversity, and wisdom spanning over many generations”
B0rne: "Honestly, I never know what to expect at our live performances. Each show is a distinct experience. The constant, however, is the energy we bring—we perform as if we're battling our way into Valhalla. Every. Single. Time.”
Star Umbra @star_umbra
Guru: "One of our most memorable moments was undoubtedly the performance at the Mohawk here in ATX.
5. What does it mean to be a SpaceGoon to you:
Jaz: “To be unapologetically you. Just like being a Straw Hat Pirate. To be a SpaceGoon is to be part of a coalition of heavy-hitting artists joining forces to achieve a common goal: restoring Hip-hop/ Rap to its purest form, authentic bars that move the soul, and spread positivity. While simultaneously pursuing and achieving our own individual goals/ dreams. And aiding each other when we can.”GLDMAZE @call.jericho
Shaad the BEAST: “For me, it means being a part of something bigger than just Shaad the BEAST. I recognize that my music alone can only reach a limited audience. As a member of this diverse group, my role is to ensure that the message resonates with my generation and audience, while also opening their ears to the impactful messages conveyed by the entire collective.”
B0rne: “To be a Goon is to be a revolutionary, both in your craft and in navigating the world we've all been forced into. It means making the best of this life. Whatever that looks like is up to you. A SpaceGoon does not under any circumstances conform. Not to anyone. Live your life authentically and embrace the freedom that comes with it."
6. How do you use the SpaceGoonz platform to address social issues and contribute change to the world:
Jaz: “Regarding my Goonz platform, I haven't done that yet… I've just been putting that stuff in a track and leaving it there. As far as the future goes, though, It's my personal goal to show the youth that there are other avenues to take in Hip Hop/Rap than gang banging, drugs, and senseless violence. To touch on the reality of it is one thing, but to glorify it is something I think has been harming the culture for some time now. So, I definitely will be tackling that in my music and my socials as well.”
Shaad the BEAST: “Confronting bipolar disorder and depression in my own life, my advocacy extends to fostering greater understanding and education about mental health disorders. I want better schools and better pay for teachers. There is a disproportionate amount of resources allocated to professional sports. These resources could be redirected to benefit the well-being of people worldwide. Many of the people who suffer to understand their own mental health issues, also struggle with one or more addictions. I advocate for more resources and funding for individuals struggling to get sober.”
WIT @witstrument
B0rne: “SpaceGoonz is more than just a collective pushing the boundaries of new-age hip-hop; it stands as an example of what it means to be an asset to your community. Leveraging our platform, we strive to raise awareness and actively contribute to the community on various fronts. Our goal is to be the ‘People’s Champ’, by any means."
7. How do you connect with fans as a group/individual:
Jaz: “Mainly through the comments and DMs, we always mingle with the fans at our live events and performances. For example, Underground Voices at the Volstead Lounge every Monday night, so come fw us.”
Shaad the BEAST: "Off stage, as an individual, I'm about half as wild and genuinely kind. I aim to connect with people as an everyday person, not as an artist or public figure, but as a human being just like everyone else. It's all about connecting within the community we've built around us—focusing on community, family, support, love. Grow and help grow. Evolve and help evolve."
The Boy @h8theboy
B0rne: “Performance, for me, is a significant avenue for connecting with fans—offering them an experience, not just music to listen to. Prior to and after events, I thoroughly enjoy getting to know as many people as possible who come out to support.”
